My name is David Hurst and I am a Front-end Developer, Designer/Artworker, and Adobe and Apple Certified Instructor. I’ve been working on Macs for over 20 years (my preference, although I’m as comfortable with Windows), using all the main Adobe software since version 1!
Whilst my early career focused on Print & Repro, I’ve also been designing for the web for about 15 years as an independent. As much as I like being creative, I also appreciate the efficacy of hand-coding and enjoy teaching people how to use the software and learn new skills even more.
Having taught others how to create outstanding print and digital media, I’ve been nosing around at the forefront of web technologies for a number of years; I naturally shifted from Desktop Publishing to web design and since DTP has morphed into ‘Digital Publishing’, I’m equally at home with XML and ePub solutions. I’m able to create workflows which take all of these areas into account; creating layouts for magazines, websites, or mobile devices with ease.
There are obvious similarities with all of these disciplines and a clean layout, strong typography, and optimised images are still the fundamental requirements of any project.
In addition to extensive experience delivering custom training classes in Adobe and Apple products, I have also gained a unique insight into the workflows of countless businesses and organisations. Working freelance for much of my career, I bring a world of practical knowledge and experience into every environment.
Keeping creative projects going, trying new web solutions, and teaching great software classes keeps me focused and enthused. Being pro-active and finding ways to help my clients thrive and my students to learn and grow motivates me.
In this business, you never stop learning. I love to learn new things every day, whether it’s new coding, improved technique or smarter workflow.
The best way to keep motivated is to set aside some time each day to learn something new. Taking advantage of slower periods to read, practise and play.
I’m currently updating my skills using Codecademy to ensure that there aren’t any gaps in my skill set. You can check my progress here.
Come on, if I stated 100% for anything, would you believe it? I think these are a fair estimation of my abilities.
I can take your project from print to screen, convert PSDs to HTML. Write code from scratch (HTML5 & CSS3 of course). Make phone and tablet-ready sites, or make you a full-blown Content Management System or Shopping Cart.
Whether you’re looking for a simple HTML5 site which is responsive to different devices, or a full-blown CMS solution which will allow multiple users to add or update content, I can provide whatever you need.
With over twenty years of experience in designing graphic user interfaces, web sites, and web applications you can be sure your web design project is in safe hands.
I provide a wide range of web services from simple low-cost websites with a few static pages to large scalable e-commerce websites with enterprise standard content management systems. All my websites are meticulously scripted using the latest web technologies and built-in SEO features to ensure your website is ready to take on any level of search engine ranking competition.
Bespoke web design services start from as little as £500* including content management system, smart-phone version, search engine optimisation, Google analytics and many other standard features with an amazing array of powerful and advanced plug-in options to extend the core website functionality at any time, now or a few months further down the road as your business’ web design requirements evolve.
Hand-coded HTML5, CSS3 and liquid layouts. Designing a user-experience to client requirements, these sites look good and don’t sacrifice functionality. Understanding code makes me a better web designer. Robust, responsive and irresistable.
Whether you require a shopping cart to sell
your wares, a community portal to meet friends and colleagues, a WordPress theme, or a web app that shines.
I have designed hundreds of brochure style websites for every type of business imaginable. Brochure websites are ideal for companies that do not sell their products or services online. Typically they are ideal for small businesses who wish to promote their services to existing and prospective customers. These businesses might be tradesmen like builders or electricians, or mobile services such as hairdressing, dog-walking or pet grooming.
I can also incorporate an advanced content management system (CMS). This is a unique password restricted area for your website. You can login from anywhere in the world with an internet connection and edit, add or delete text, images, link to other pages or websites and even upload audio or video to your pages.
Brochure websites are a great tool to add to your marketing and can easily incorporate Facebook and Twitter to your site so that everyone knows what you are offering.
Want to sell your products or services online? If so an ecommerce website is for you. An advanced system allows you to be in control of your business at all times. The admin area will allow you to add unlimited categories and sub categories, upload product images, prices and descriptions and a whole lot more. Some of the features are listed below:
Maybe you are in the need of that something a little bit different ? I can create bespoke website designs tailored to your needs, for small businesses and large corporations. The first thing is to be clear as to your requirements and start by listing everything that the website needs to do by way of functionality, then email it to me. I will then go through your brief step by step, and create solutions for you.
Your existing branding can be incorporated, or a new identity created from scratch. All of the sites I produce can be viewed on all devices, from desktop to tablet or phone.

I’ve been using Dreamweaver since version 3!
It is the industry-standard application for Web Design & Development
These examples are a somewhat poor attempt to demonstrate my skill set. Due to confidentiality clauses and intellectual property agreements, I struggle to put together quality urls. Some of these examples are just the versions hosted on my webspace, not the actual sites which tend to get broken or replaced after a while.
Having converted the previous site to Wordpress and emulating the style of the original, the re-design is a thousand times better laid out and encompasses some serious WP customisation with custom port-types and taxonomies.
Based in the heart of Manchester’s Northern Quarter, Walrus is a funky bar with a cool vibe and dj’s playing every weekend. Some choice photography, ubiquitous parallax scrolling and bold block typography.
The consumer-facing brand of Leads2Trade. The previous site was Flash-based and the new one features flat design with SVGs and scrolling animation built into a custom WordPress theme.
Rosylee Tearooms was the first project for Mark Andrew Developments and was a ground-up design and branding exercise incorporating logo, signage, promotional materials and website.
The Leads2Trade website is a B2B site written in .net. I was a little out of my depth with this one but managed to maintain and develop it a little during a six month contract. It still works at least!
A demo wordpress theme for a B2C site using bootstrap. This was turned around in two days to demonstrate a cost-effective way to skin a comparison engine site.
Tusk Manchester is an African-themed cocktail bar with a cool vibe and decor. Something stylish but monochrome was requested. An early experience working with the Skrollr.js animation library.
Put together over a weekend for a friend’s sign and vehicle graphics business, this custom WordPress theme incorporates custom post types and taxonomies. A work in progress!
I can take the creative design concepts from your designer, tidying up or reworking the design to create an entire document, fixing colours, typography, inconsistencies, etc and making the file print-ready. A good eye for detail and technical knowledge of Macs, servers and design and office software means that I’m able to produce and provide a consistent level of work across a variety of platforms from advertising and corporate literature to exhibition stands and direct mail. Occasionally you may also require someone to produce necessary mock-ups and design visuals.
As well as understanding design for print, I also work cross-media to provide design and graphics for websites, e-marketing and other digital media.
Logos, branding, promotional literature. It’s a tough market, and you need a hard sell. Stand out, be noticed, and be heard. I can help you get your message across.
Whether you require a slick brochure site to market yourself and your business, a shopping cart to sell your wares, or a community portal to meet friends, colleagues or associates. Own your online presence
Stay competitive or just get clued-up. Software and technologies move at a frightening rate! Creative Suite goodness or HTML heaven. From zero to hero!
My career has focused heavily on learning new skills and teaching them to others. Consequently I struggle to provide meaningful examples of what I can do. Confidentiality clauses and intellectual property agreements mean that a lot of what I have done cannot be used for any other purpose. The examples featured here may provide some insight into my abilities but if you’re unsure about my suitability for a particular role, why not set me a challenge? There’s nothing I like more 😉
You want keyboard shortcuts? Smarter ways of working? Automation of repetitive tasks? Maybe you need to cut costs and bring your design in-house? Advice on best practise or just need to know how stuff works. It couldn’t be any easier…
